Part 1: Two scholarly journal articles
Part 2: Researchers Similarities and Differences
In both articles, The researchers are studying and identifying the effect that substances that are around or in a child's life has affected the way they learn and think in an educational setting. In the first article written by Cheng Huang, he is more focused on how smoking in china is a serious issue and he studied how it differentiates between ages, boys and girls, and in primary schools and things like that. He provides a chart of information that allows us as the readers to know the facts and findings of his research and study. In the second article written by, Cooley-Strickland, Michele is more focused around how the community violence may affect how a children learns in school. Now both ideas are very abstract the second article is more a public health issue. . as stated in Cooley’s research “School-based treatment and preventive interventions are needed for children at elevated risk for exposure to community violence.” Working with children whose lives are centered on the streets is very important because as they get older it will be come harder and harder for them to be taken off the block and have motivation and drive to want to learn and get a better education. The first article is geared more to children in China while on the other hand the research was done on mostly American children.
Part 3: Conventions, Affordances, Constraints etc.
- What are their conventions?
- The conventions in both articles are similar, They took this main idea and form of research being children and the effects on the outside world such as drugs and public health and brought their ideas and research even smaller and focused on just girls or just boys of a certain age group
- Affordances and constraints?
- The affordances of both journals are that their is charts and proof of the research right there embedded in the journal articles.
- The constraints would be that since you are reading a journal you don't have a way of asking the author questions on his/her piece.
- What’s each author’s purpose?
- The author's purpose for both pieces is to inform the other researchers or the other people reading the articles about what is going on in some countries and the different concerns of if children are getting the education they need.
- Who is their audience?
- The audience is intended for other researchers, but also could benefit educators
Key words:
Article 1: Behavior, Smoking, Youth, Schools,Students, peers
Article 2: Community,violence,Children and youth, Urban,African American,Internalizing,Externalizing ,Substance use,Academic Prevention,
Part 4: What is important?:
The information in both articles are very important to be informed about but what strikes me more is the second article on community violence and children. If a child is in danger in their own community they are more than likely not going to have the motivation to want to learn. They are going to be driven to the t=streets or to follow what their parents may make them do and sometimes this can put the child at risk for many different things. I hope to do more research on this issue and see if any research has worked and studied in a community like this hands-on to see what it was like for theses children.
